How to Grow Celery!

By Terry Blackburn Growing Celery Celery is a vegetable that is popular with the health conscious. It is almost absent of calories, yet contains important vitamins and minerals. Dieters often munch on it all day long, in the certain knowledge that it will not head straight for their hips. While some people complain that it has little taste, it's that mild flavour that makes it such a great tool for dipping into your favourite dip, salad dressing, or sauce. It also adds a little crunch to any recipe. Celery can be eaten uncooked in salads, it has a wonderfully clean, fresh taste; it can be boiled, steamed or used in a main course dish, added to stews or made into soup. Celery requires a longer growing season, lots of water and prefers cooler temperatures. It is a biennial plant (Apium graveolens) of the family Umbelliferae or parsley family, It was first cultivated for medicinal use, then (during the Middle Ages) as a flavouring and finally as a food, chiefly for soups and salads; the seeds are still used for seasoning. Soil Preparation As celery requires a great deal of water, it does best in soil, which is water retentive. The bed where celery is to grow should be prepared during December or January, if of course weather permits. Dig out a trench 1 ft. (45cm) wide and 16 in. (406mm) deep. Put the soil on either side of the trench so that two ridges are formed. Smooth out the top of each ridge with the back of the spade and pat down slightly to make it firm. The top of the ridges is the perfect place to sow a catch crop such as radish, lettuce or spinach, which will allow the vegetable garden to be made full use of the available space. Ridges should have at least 2- ft (75cm) between them. Into the bottom of the trench put a 6 in. layer of well-rotted manure and compost. On top add 5 in. (127mm) of soil this should fill the trench to within 6 in. (15cm) of surface level. Apply fish manure over the soil at a rate of 4 oz. (120g) to the yard run. As the celery grows it will require several feeds with a liquid manure to bust up the growth. Sowing Always purchase disease-free seed that is resistant to blight because celery is particularly susceptible to this disease. Sow the seeds in the middle of February in trays of John Innes seed compost at a temperature of 60 to 65 deg F. (16 to 18deg C.) in a greenhouse. Cover the tray with a piece of glass which should be lifted each day and the underside wiped dry. As soon as the seedlings are through the glass should be removed completely. When the seedlings are about in. (12mm) high, prick them out and plant into 3 in (76mm) deep pots in John Innes potting compost No 1. The pots should remain in the greenhouse until late April early may when they can be taken outside and put into a cold frame to harden off. If it is not possible to start them in a greenhouse they can be sown outside under cloches in late March or early April. Leave the seedlings growing under the cloches until they are planted out into the trenches. Planting The plants should be about 3 or 4 in. (76mm-101mm) by early June, that is the time to plant them into the trenches. In the centre of the bottom of the trench, make holes with a trowel 1 ft. (30cm) apart then plant the young celery plants, firming in the roots. Half fill the trench with water after planting to ensure that the roots are in firmly. General care If the weather is dry, soak the trench again in ten days after planting out; this will prevent the roots from drying out, as this must not be allowed to happen. After a month, start to use a liquid feed every ten days. Keep the area free from weeds and remove any side growths coming up from the base of the plants.
It is important to cover the tops of the plants with straw, then over the straw place cloches in readiness for winter protection; it will prevent water from trickling down into the celery hearts, as this will inevitably rot the celery from the insides. Earthing Up Begin to earth up the plants in the middle of August when they reach about 1 ft. (30cm) high. Use the soil from the top of the ridges to add into the trenches to a depth of 6 in. (15cm). To avoid soil from falling into the centre of the plants between the stems, take hold of the plant in one hand, bringing the stems together, whilst pushing the soil around them with the other. The next earthing up can be done about three weeks later. Pat the sides of the earthed up trench with the back of the spade so that they are sloping smoothly away from the plants. This will help the rain to run off without soaking the top. The third earthing up is done in October and again ensure that the sides are smooth and steep. Water is required at the roots of the plants; therefore a length of pipe inserted into the ground close by each plant, will allow the water when poured down the pipe to reach the roots. Harvesting Celery stems should be white before they are eaten. To achieve this, it will take about 8 weeks after earthing up has begun. When removing celery, make sure that soil is put into its place so that the ridge will not brake up and so expose the adjacent plant. Self-Blanching Celery This type of early celery has less flavour and is less hardy than the other. It is grown for use in September and October and must be cleared before any risk of frost. Since we psychologists have benefited from the people who use these services it seems only right that some of the things we've found should be given back. In this series of articles I will outline some of the more practically useful findings that have come from this research and provide a summary of the results reported in academic psychology journals, written for those who probably have the greatest interest in this knowledge: the daters themselves. There is quite a bit of material to cover so I have organised it into a series of six articles: The Psychologist's Viewpoint This article gives an idea of the scope of research using personal advertisements, the way personal profiles are used in research, and the kind of things psychologists can find out when they put their minds to it. He wants and she is This outlines research into the things that men say they are looking for in a partner. Alongside this we look at how women describe themselves. Combining these we can assess how accurately women understand what men want and use the right kind of language to attract a man's interest. Before getting into the results of the research we need to take a brief tour around the ways in which research psychologists use personal advertisements and the kinds of things they can find, so we have some idea of the sort of things that psychologists can and cannot say about personal advertisements and internet dating profiles. Content Analysis Personal advertisements have been a rich source of information for social scientists investigating dating behaviours. To give an idea of the scale of this enterprise, my own research in this area is based on the analysis of nearly five thousand advertisements collected from UK local newspapers. Apart from this I have copies of more than sixty research reports published by colleagues in Brazil, Canada, Hungary, Japan, Poland, UK and USA. This adds up to about thirty thousand individual profiles that have been analysed by psychologists, sociologists and other professional researchers. Most of this research has used printed personal ads extracted from newspapers and magazines as these are more useful to us (as explained below) but the information and insights gained can be applied to any situation where first impressions come from written descriptions, so these results are directly relevant and useful to people using internet dating sites. Creating a profile for an internet dating site usually involves describing yourself on a whole host of listed options such as eye colour (blue, green etc.), smoking habit, attractiveness, salary etc. This information is usually entered into the site using a form. Within this form each person makes their own choices from the options available but because it is a form, everyone has to mention the same kinds of things. In a sense, the dating site has already decided what the important features are and you simply tick the correct boxes when describing yourself and describing the sort of person you want to meet. With printed personal advertisements there is no detailed form to fill in and you can write whatever you want. The only restriction is on the number of words with an escalating charge per word up to a maximum limit. As a result these advertisements are quite short, averaging about 22 words. This is typically enough space to mention about nine things, whether these are your own attributes (age, hair and eye colour, looks) or things you are looking for in a partner (sense of humour, marital status, age range, personality, height). Given these restrictions we can reasonably expect that people mention the most important things as they see it, so the content of these advertisements tell us what characteristics the writers think are important to the other sex, and what key things they are looking for themselves. For example, a personal advertisement that says "Stunning, curvy and adventurous 22 year old blonde female is looking for a financially secure older man, ideally with own hair and teeth, who will spoil her rotten." gives a pretty clear indication of what matters to this person and what she is offering in return. Researchers have taken thousands of personal advertisements and analysed them to look for general patterns. From this, they have identified some very clear differences between the kinds of things that are important to men and women when looking for a partner. They have also looked at how well the self descriptions of each sex matches the features that the other sex says they want, giving an indication of how much each sex understands about what the other sex is looking for. Results from this kind of research are discussed in the articles He wants and she is, and She wants and he is. Apart from the specific attributes and features mentioned, there are also more general differences in how people write these descriptions. For example women tend to give more detailed information about the sort of person they are looking for than men, while men are more focussed on describing themselves. Looking at a profile from this perspective tells us quite a lot about the approach people take to dating, including whether they are looking for a few high quality matches or just want as many dates as they can possibly get. This research is summarised in the article Blitzers, Boasters and Being Choosy. Knowing how people describe themselves and the sort of thing they are looking for also allows us to look at broader questions such as whether people are looking for others who are similar to themselves or would prefer a partner who is different but, in some sense, complementary. This is discussed in the article Like for Like or Opposites Attract where we find that both are true once we understand a more basic and useful theory of attraction. Experimental Research Apart from examining the advertisements that real people have written in the hope of finding a partner, psychologists have occasionally become active researchers and have placed experimental personal advertisements to see how many and what type of response they get. For example, if two almost identical advertisements are placed and one receives twice as many responses as the other, this tells us that the difference between these ads (which may be as small as one word) has a big effect on the chances of attracting a date. Some psychologists have also used this type of research to investigate the sort of things that men and women write when responding to an advertisement. This has given researchers another way to classify the different approaches to dating and to identify groups such as the 'blitzers' who send responses to everyone in the hope that some of them will score a hit. Native to North America, Ilex verticillata is a deciduous shrub that loses it's shiny deep green leaves each winter, right after they turn orange and then yellow. The female varieties, when pollinated by a male, produce gorgeous red fruit that will remain on the branches long after the leaves have fallen, well into winter (unless eaten by birds). This week we are featuring the most compact Ilex verticillata - 'Red Sprite,' maturing at about half the size of other winterberry hollies. 'Red Sprite' is a neat compact rounded shrub that matures to an average height and width of only 3-4 feet - ideal for foundation planting or in the smaller garden. This female variety produces unusually large red berries, reaching close to 1/2 inch in diameter. Like all winterberry hollies, the stems can also be cut and kept in a vase with no water for months. When the crew and journalists located a plant, Kruiper sliced off a stalk looking like some kind of small cucumber. He took off the sharp spines. Leslie Stahl, the brave one, ate it. She described the taste as "a little cucumbery in texture, but not bad." Stahl suffered no "side effects"; that is, no funny taste in her mouth, no queasy stomach, no heart palpitations, no nuthin'. And, she felt no hunger throughout the day, not even at the times of her usual eating hours. She also felt no need or desire to drink anything throughout the day in the desert. "I'd have to say it did work," said Stahl. Hoodia might be new to modern Western civilization, but the San, indigenous to southern Africa, have been chewing the succulent stems and leaves for possibly more than 100,000 years. They know what's good and what's not in their region of the planet. Some of them still live in old traditional huts, and still cook "Bush food" gathered from the desert the old-fashioned way. The first Western scientific investigation of the plant was conducted at South Africa's national laboratory. Because the San were known to eat hoodia, it was included in a study of indigenous foods. "What they found was when they fed it to animals, the animals ate it and lost weight," says Dr. Richard Dixey, the head of an English pharmaceutical company called Phytopharm that is now researching and developing weight-loss products based on hoodia. Hoodia's potential application as an appetite suppressant was not immediately obvious, however. "It took them a long time. You can work directly with these people, learn from them, and help each other as you search for your family.

Its fun: Do you remember the first time you stared at the record in front of you before breaking into whoops of joy at finding your long-lost ancestor? Do you remember the days of excitement while you told your family about the discovery? We only get a few of those moments usually scattered over the years of searching. You can gather a few more of these moments vicariously through your local genealogy society. When you find an ancestor for someone else, it is almost as much fun as finding your own. Society offices, museums, and libraries are filled with excitement and stories of these wonderful moments shared together.

One good deed deserves another: I joined the Greene County Genealogy Society in Tennessee several years ago when they helped me climb over one of the brick walls that occasionally block our research path. Their diligence and knowledge of the local archives produced the Last Will and Testament of my ancestor, James H. Hall, Sr. and named his entire family and a flood of new information for me. The cost: $3.00 for copies and mailing. Woo Hoo! by far the biggest bargain I have ever received. I sent a check for a lifetime membership in lieu of the $3.00 charge.
I dont even live near Greene County, but the membership has continued to produce information about my family there including a diary that mentions James and other members of the family along with details about their lives. You might choose to join a local society where you can participate on a daily or weekly basis.

Donate your talents: Dont have money available to join? Donate your time and talent. Societies are always looking for people with all kinds of talents or people with time to do all kinds of tasks. Can you organize, answer phones, research data? Are you interested in transcribing documents, indexing, raising money, promoting the group? Whatever your talents and interests, the local society can use them and you will reap the rewards of helping other people sometimes people you have never met.

Donate money: Dont have time to join and play an active part? Societies can always use donations to improve their displays, repair the plumbing, or pay the light bills. Money is always appreciated in a non-profit organization. You never know what the need are until you ask. My suggestion is that you allow the local group to decide how to best spend your donation; dont attach any strings to the donation. Those who are active on committees and boards are in the best position to spend the money in the best possible way.
