Knowing the teams now will save you time in August and Matt Fargo is here to help you get a grasp of what to expect this upcoming year. We go from worst to first in this 2006 College Football Preview. #68 Oklahoma St. Cowboys 4-7 SU; 3-7 ATS Fargos Take The Mike Gundy no huddle offense hit a lot of snags in its first year of inception but that was to be expected. With a season in the books, the Cowboys should be more efficient on offense and they really have no where to go but up. The offense is extremely young still with just two senior starters so we might be looking at 2007 as the year for the ultimate breakthrough. After a promising 3-0 start last year thanks to a cupcake schedule, Oklahoma St. dropped seven of its final eight games with only two of those defeats being competitive games. The youth showed in the game against Texas as they had a 19-point lead only to lose by that same amount. The defense was just as bad as the offense and with only five starters returning, there isnt much hope of a huge revitalization. A soft slate will lead to a similar start as last year but a similar ending to the season is possible as well. Returning Starters on Offense 8 Its hard to become cohesive on offense when three different quarterbacks are leading the team. That was the case in Stillwater in 2005 as youth and injuries to the quarterbacks hurt the offense. Sophomore Bobby Reid did not put up huge numbers as a freshman but he is the likely starter by default. Word is that he has a renewed confidence but his spring practices did not show a whole lot. He does have some great talent around him led by receiver DJuan Woods, a consensus preseason All-Big XII pick. Woods will have help on the other side from North Carolina transfer Adarius Bowman. The running game is in good shape with sophomore Mike Hamilton, who gained 961 yards on 5.0 ypc as a freshman. The offensive line is fairly experienced and small but that is a good fit with this offense. Returning Starters on Defense 5 The Cowboys finished 95th in both total defense and scoring defense and most of that damage came after the first three cupcake games. The defense yielded 31.3 ppg on the season but that jumped to 40.1 ppg in the final eight games as it allowed fewer than 34 points only once. Like the offense, the defense is extremely young with only three senior starters and only five seniors on the two-deep chart. The rushing defense was horrid last season, allowing 205.4 ypg on 4.9 ypc and the defensive line is where all three seniors are located. If those rushing numbers dont get better, the unit could take another huge step backwards. The linebackers and secondary are very raw with the only returning starter being strong safety Donovan Woods, a converted quarterback from last season. Schedule As mentioned earlier, the Cowboys will likely be 3-0 once again this season with games against Missouri St., Arkansas St. and Florida Atlantic starting off the year. From there, things could get ugly starting with three straight road games at Houston, Kansas St. and Kansas. The worst part is that those are all likely losses yet are the three remaining easy road games on the schedule. Five of the last six games are against teams that will be contending in their respective divisions in the Big XII with a much improved Baylor team being the other contest. The game against the Bears is at home and is the only swing game in the final eight meaning a 4-8 record is likely unless there are upsets along the way. You can bet on Former head coach Les Miles left the cupboard pretty bare for Gundy and he is doing his best to get things headed in the right direction. This was one of the youngest teams in the country last year and the Cowboys are ranked 88th in experience ratings this season. Give them one more year and we could see a resurgence. Oklahoma St. went 0-4 ATS as a road dog last season and is now 8-20 against the number when receiving points on the road. The Cowboys will be in that role in five of their six away games this season, the game at Arkansas St. being the lone exception. With such a youthful team, winning on the road is near impossible while keeping those games close is nearly as difficult. Matt Fargo is a documented member of the Professional Handicappers League.

By MR Gooding Boseli stands 10 feet tall and weighs about 12,000 pounds. He is an African elephant and the largest land animal in the world, but today he is just another expectant father pacing nervously back and forth swinging his trunk and looking worried. Boseli waved his trunk, "Congratulations, you and Nami must be very proud!" My Savannah is still with the matriarch and she won't let me near her yet!" Boseli said with disappointment. The matriarch was the leader of the herd of females. It was her responsibility to teach the other females about survival and to care for the young as a group for safety. Not even Boseli could disregard her guiding principles. Boseli slid down the sloped embankment and into the soothing sludge. Ambos started in after him when he heard Savannah's proud call. Boseli turned to Ambos. He had heard her as well. Boseli reached his long muddy trunk upward to Ambos and he pulled his big brother up the slippery mud embankment. Together, they charged back to where the matriarch and other females were gathered. They stopped suddenly when they glimpsed a large shadow nuzzling a smaller one. Slowly they came closer to the two plump figures and ambos, respecting his brother and his place in the herd, stopped and nudged Boseli forward. "She's exhausted, Bosei," the matriarch said firmly, "don't be long." She patted his shoulder with her trunk to show her approval and headed for the relaxing mud hole. Savannah waved her trunk to her mate. "Come see our calf, Boseli," she whispered. "It will be as many as five years before we can have another. "He is going to need a name you know." She reached out her trunk and affectionately ran it up and down Boseli's. He winked at her and lowered his voice, "I know that his mother must have spent the entire 11 months of pregnancy thinking of one for him." "Well, she said with a playful smile, "I was thinking of a strong warrior name like 'Chad'. What do you think, Boseli?" Staring down at his new calf sprawled on the ground he didn't look like any warrior Boseli had ever seen. Still, he knew that when a name was given, usually, sometimes without knowing it, you would live up to your name. Boseli wanted his young male to be strong and perhaps become leader of the bachelor herd someday like himself. "I think you have chosen the perfect name for our offspring," he nodded. "I will announce his name to the others immediately while you get your much needed rest." Boseli stroked little Chad with his trunk. Savannah laughed softly, "Our little Chad will bring us much amusement in about four months when he tries to control all of those 40,000 muscles that make up his trunk." Consistent Marketing Provides Big Rewards

When we consciously create consistent messages, brands, systems and communications, our customers begin to relax and know that we are trustworthy and reliable. This consistency enhances our marketing messages and fuels our marketing machine. Perception is everything. And, how you do everything, from completing projects on time, to returning phone calls is critically important when trying to build a strong brand. What can you do on a consistent basis that will rev up your marketing efforts? 1. Clarify your target market or niche. Your target market, also known as your niche, is the group of people to whom you wish to market your products or services. It is vitally important that you have your target clearly defined so that you arent wasting your time doing activities that will not produce the results youre looking for. When you have a clearly defined niche, its easier to craft marketing messages, materials, seminars and articles that will serve your clients and build your business. 2. Set up a time for returning phone calls to clients. Its really important, not only for your personal sanity, but also for creating a sense of consistency around your business operations, to set up a clearly defined time for returning telephone calls. First, from a personal energy standpoint, its much easier and time efficient to return calls at one or two time intervals each day, than to react and respond to calls as they come in. You can train your clients or potential clients to understand how you operate, by simply leaving a message on your voice mail that you will return calls promptly twice per day. Of course, you can alter the schedule to fit your needs, but then you dont need to feel overwhelmed or overburdened reacting to every ring of the phone. 3. Create folders to handle email. Most people will agree that handling email is one of the most time consuming tasks. To deal more efficiently and effectively with the volumes of email you may be receiving, create email folders within your email program to handle the mail sorting. Almost every email program contains the ability to design custom email folders which email is automatically sorted into as they are received. You can create folders for your clients (by client name), vendors or suppliers you deal with, family members, as well as for newsletters or other frequently received materials. Whether you choose to categorize folders by names or subject matter, email folders will cut down the time consuming process of wading through one long list of emails. 4. Schedule email handling. Similarly to handling your telephone calls, its important to set aside regular times to answer your email. It is so tempting to keep checking your email to see if you have any new mail or surprises! Unfortunately, that activity wastes your valuable time and is distracting to your mental energies. You may find that answering your email first thing in the morning, immediately after lunch and then at the end of the day (allocating no more than 30-minutes at each sitting, if possible) works well. No matter how tempting it might be, discipline yourself to look at email only at these times unless there is an overriding circumstance. Just like in the case of returning phone calls, this will allow you to keep your mental energies focused on the work you have to do. 5. Use a calendar system. Scheduling your activities, while it might sound dull or boring, is actually the best way to ensure that you are operating in an optimal way! To do lists are wonderful, however, to do lists get done faster when theyre actually integrated into your calendar. Giving yourself due dates serves to motivate you and pull you forward to accomplishing things. When putting items from your to do list on your calendar, make sure you break each of these items in to smaller items which are easier to do. Completing shorter, smaller tasks will give you a sense of achievement that will help motivate you to move to the next step. Also, make sure you build in slack time by either scheduling it or taking each task and blocking out more than enough time to get it done. 6. Schedule creative time to balance your energy. You may have heard the phrase, all work and no play makes us dull. Dull is not a quality that will lead to business success. Creative time gives you the space to re-vitalize your mind, body, and spirit its playtime! Having time to balance out your energy is critical to your business success. Its important to have new ideas and points of view to keep your business perspective fresh. Using the calendar system described in Tip #5, make sure you schedule in creative time at least once per week. Creative time can mean different things to different people. Your creative time might consist of taking a walk, enjoying a bubble bath, reading through magazines or books for pleasure, or even listening to music. 7. Hire a virtual assistant. A virtual assistant or a VA, as they are commonly referred to, is a wonderful addition to any business operation. They can be just as valuable to a new businessperson as they are to one who is experienced. If you are feeling overwhelmed, or you dont have a skill in a particular area, instead of spinning your wheels and wasting valuable time, find someone who can help you out. A virtual assistant can be hired by the hour or by the project or even by some other creative arrangement. You dont need to hire a full-time assistant or consultant to get through some of the challenging issues in your business. 8. Use technology to your advantage. Technology tools will make your business operations much easier. One excellent tool you can use to save a lot of time and energy is auto responders. An auto responder is a system that allows you to automatically send information to your clients. Lets say that you have a free special report that you want to be automatically sent to anyone who requests it. Instead of manually processing each of these requests, you can actually set up an auto responder that automatically emails the report for you. 9. Creation in bulk. What do you do in your business that you do a lot of? Do you write a lot of articles, or marketing letters, or do you have a monthly newsletter or weekly eZine? In order to make the most of your time and ability to concentrate your energies, try to do many things at one sitting or over a one or two day period. We all know how hard it is to get started on a new project! It is a lot more efficient to write several months of newsletters or marketing letters in a single sitting than to do them at separate times. Youll feel great when you can sit back and see that youve accomplished a year of work in a day or two. And, dont forget to schedule this time in your calendar! 10. Consistent messages. Communicating a consistent message in your marketing is important to your business success. For example make sure you website, your email signature and your business cards and stationery all have the same look and feel. The fonts and styles and colors should all be similar. If you are serving different marketing niches, make sure that you have separate and distinct materials for each, including a separate website. Dont confuse your potential clients by communicating things that are inconsistent. If they are confused, then more than likely, theyll think that you are!
